2011 Year in Review: Beach renourishment continues with vote

CREDIT: Karen O'Dowd
Longboat Key’s erosive North End received a new 130-foot wide beach last fall. Public Works Director Juan Florensa said the $5 million project placed a total of 150,000 cubic yards of fine white sand from the Broadway beach access to the north tip of the island. Florensa said the beach was a short-term fix that was authorized by the commission as an interim measure.
The sand on the North End has already experienced significant erosion in the past several months since its placement, and the Town Commission will need to decide on a more permanent structural solution to erosion. Options include terminal groins, breakwaters, jetties and semi-permeable groins. It is important, said Florensa, that the commission makes a decision regarding the North End structures because it will take another year to design and

2011 Year in Review: Publix renovation planned for 2012

The Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board has been considering this year a site plan and application for a redeveloped Publix and Avenue of the Flowers Shopping Center, which also includes a town center. And town staff is recommending approval of the plan after months of negotiations and working with the applicant to increase buffering and configure parking and other issues optimally.
The proposed new Publix will be 49,533 square feet, an increase from the current 38,565 square feet. The addition of liquor and pharmaceutical sales is also in the plan. The shops next to and including Nosh-A-Rye are owned by Howard Rooks. Publix intends to buy and add 1.52 acres from that parcel and add it to the main parcel. Publix also intends to buy from Rooks another .97 acres to the north of the Publix site, which is vacant land that was previously

2011 Year in Review: Do dogs belong on Longboat beaches?

Another contentious issue on Longboat this year has been the idea of allowing dogs on the beach. The town has an ordinance in place that prohibits dogs on the beach with or without a leash.
Some residents are supportive of the idea of dogs on the beach, stating the potential benefits of vacationers who may choose to visit based on the ability to bring their pets. Others are opposed to the idea, citing waste material and disease as well as threats to endangered sea turtle eggs and the dog bite liability.
The Town Commission, after hearing from residents on the pros and cons of allowing dogs access to Longboat Key beaches, decided last fall to form an ad hoc committee where both sides can form an approach that takes in the many property and health concerns of those opposed and the desires of those in favor who want their pets to enjoy

2011 Year in Review: P&Z director resigns following investigation

Another top management position saw a major change as Planning, Building and Zoning Director Monica Simpson was placed on administrative leave and subsequently let go. According to Police Chief Al Hogle who was serving as the interim town manager at the time, the Simpson issue came to a light when a Planning, Zoning and Building Department employee came forth with a formal grievance complaint that alleged a hostile work environment. Hogle said soon after another employee in the same department came forth with similar grievances and allegations.
Hogle said that after consulting with Town Attorney David Persson and labor attorney Reynolds Allen, he initiated an investigative review of the department. Hogle appointed Capt. Bill Tokajer to speak with each employee in the department, with the understanding that all conversations must be

2011 Year in Review: Colony court battles rage on

The Colony’s redevelopment plans have been ongoing this year, with the question of not only who will be chosen to redevelop the property by the Colony Association members, but also whether the association will even be in charge of choosing the redevelopment plan, or if it will be former Colony Chairman Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber.
Colony Association President Jay Yablon and representatives from the association’s chosen developer, Club Holdings, met with community members, town staff and several commissioners in December to make clear their intent to redevelop the Colony sooner rather than later and with or without the three acres and interest controlled by Klauber. Yablon and Club Holdings, led by Principal Glenn Miller, will be submitting a site plan and performing due diligence with the town.
In short, the association is

2011 Year in Review: St. Denis resigns, Bullock hired as manager

Former Town Manager Bruce St. Denis and former Planning, Building and Zoning Director Monica Simpson both left the town this year. First, St. Denis resigned Sept. 16, following the news that a majority of the seven-member Town Commission wanted him out of office. St. Denis had served 14 years as town manager of Longboat Key.
And while speculation regarding why a majority of the commission was so dissatisfied with St. Denis that they wished him to resign ran rampant, Town Attorney Dave Persson said St. Denis was the exception in his longevity in the position.
“Mr. St. Denis has served the town of Longboat Key for more than 14 years,” said Persson. “That’s the longest serving town manager in the town’s history. The average tenure for a town manager is about five years. The fact that Bruce has been here for almost three times

2011 Year in Review

At the end of each year, Longboat Key News reviews the events that occurred, particularly the issues shaping the town and its future. Many events are ongoing and have been debated and changed over several years and multiple commissions, such as the Vision Plan, the beach renourishment project and structural solutions to the North End beach erosion.
This year, however, marked several significant new topics that have the potential to change the future of Longboat Key such as The Colony closing, the proposed cell tower at Longboat Island Chapel and whether to allow dogs on the beach.
The following is a summary of the events that shaped the news in 2011 and will continue to inform our key far into 2012 and

Bradenton Police say homicides increased, but violent crimes decreased

BRADENTON - Sarasota County and the city of Bradenton are distinct places, but they share one thing that they hope will not continue: more murders this year than last."We've had on record 6-7 years straight where crimes have been down. But when you get so low, there's nowhere to go but up," says Lt. Darrell Akemon of the Bradenton Police Department. And that's exactly what happened in the city when it comes to the 2011 crime statistics. "In the city of Bradenton, crimes were slightly up at this time. We're finding increase in property crimes, larceny, burglary."Lt. Akemon says that violent crimes within city limits were actually down, but homicides are up, from 0 in 2010 to 2 in 2011. "We've solved one of the 2 homicides. The other we are working on."He says officers check crime statistics on a weekly basis. If one area has more crime

Boat ramp parking solution planned

PALMETTO - The city of Palmetto may be close to buying a vacant lot near its boat ramp. That would help solve a parking problem at the ramp. But the city has bigger ideas, too. Chris Lassen has spotted an opening. He runs to his truck and rushes to get his boat down the ramp and into the water – and his truck and trailer back into its parking space – before someone else shows up. Before the serenity on the water comes the strategy in the parking lot.“It gets to the point where you gotta take a spot, make sure everyone else launches their boat, and then you can go launch,” Lassen says. The Palmetto boat ramp has 17 spaces for boat trailers. As many as 50 more boaters used to park in a vacant lot across the street, until the property owner started towing

WHAT THEY'RE ALL ABOUT: Now that the United States is pulling its troops out of Iraq there are those that think the war is over and the military will take care of the returning troops. But there are still troops in Kuwait and Afghanistan and more being sent over in the coming year.
There are also troops who are coming home, but are having a difficult time readjusting to life outside of the military.
The volunteers at Manasota Operation Troops Support (MOTS) understand that the need is still there. Their mission is to provide support for the local deployed military troops deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait and to support their families here at home. Sarasota Memorial: Breast-feeding Yes, Formula No

Ever since the breast-feeding incident at a Houston Target store, feeding babies by breast has garnered plenty of comments from folks both for and against feeding in public.
Locally, Sarasota Memorial Hospital has dedicated itself to a pro- breast-feeding hospital for new mothers and recently received funding to purchased donated breast milk.
In Florida, 79.5 percent of mothers have breast-fed their children at one time, according to a 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention breast-feeding report card. Get Well Soon Sarasota Pineapple Drop

Ever since the Downtown Sarasota Alliance canceled Sarasota’s world famous pineapple drop, we’re concerned about Pineapple’s health and whereabouts.
In hiding for months, we found the pineapple to be intensive care, receiving an IV drip of juice, as doctors hope it will get well enough for next year.

Until then, it will lead a mysterious journey — perhaps even in isolation — until it can descend itself upon Sarasota in all of its fruity glory.
Here are my Top 5 Storylines for What Happens to Pineapple:
1. Pineapple goes on tour with Toby Keith for a remix of “Red Solo Cup” titled “Pineapple Drop.”

Elections Offices Gearing Up for Republican Primary

Florida’s Republican voters will troop to the polls on Jan. 31 to make their marks on the presidential preference primary. Nine candidates are in the running.
The deadline to register and qualify for the election is Jan. 3. Because there is no other issue on the ballot in Sarasota County, only registered Republicans can vote on Jan. 31. Florida is a “closed primary” state, so only Republicans can vote in the Republican Primary.
The Sarasota elections office has not yet drawn new precinct boundaries, so polling places will remain as they have in the past. In Manatee, the lines were re-drawn, and about 40,000 Manatee voters will have a new place to cast their ballots.
In alphabetical order as they will appear on the ballot, the nine Republican presidential candidates are:
Michele Bachmann
Herman Cain
Newt Gingrich

Sarasota Moms Stage Breast-Feeding in Target

A group of Sarasota mothers participated in a breast-feeding "nurse-in" at the Fruitville Road Target on Wednesday morning to show support after a mother in Houston was harassed by Target employees.
The women met at about 10 a.m. to feed until the kids were finished or the moms ran out of stuff to talk about, joked Cheryl Kindred of Sarasota, who was with her son Noah, 2, who is out of the breast-feeding phase.
Since the Houston incident, nurse-ins are being staged all across the country at Targets today.
Target’s policy has always been to allow mothers to breast-feed their children in the stores, said Fruitville Target Store Team Leader Andrea Leo.
“We’re happy to allow breast-feeding in any area of our stores,” Leo said. Leo said she could not speak to the incident in Texas.
The group of about 12 women were all

Man Arrested for Attempted Wells Fargo Bank Robbery

A Sarasota man is under custody today after authorities say he attempted to rob the Wells Fargo bank last week.
Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested 37-year-old Kenneth Lorne Crosby, of 1906 Livingstone Street, Sarasota, on one count of attempted robbery with a firearm for the attempted bank robbery that occurred on Dec. 20 at the Wells Fargo bank located at 8595 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
That was the first of two Wells Fargo banks that had an attempted robbery that day, the other being in city limits. No arrests by Sarasota Police Department have been made in that case.
After releasing bank surveillance video of the suspect, detectives received numerous tips about the suspect’s identity, the sheriff’s office said. Crosby, seen in the video with bleached blond hair, had dyed it in an attempt to avoid

Could Sarasota Sears and Kmart Close?

After a poor holiday season, Sears Holding Corp. announced Tuesday it will close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart Stores, according an article in the Wall Street Journal online.
Sears Holding has not announced which stores will close, but is expected to post the list on its website once the company makes those decisions, according to Yahoo Finance.
"While our past practice has been to keep marginally performing stores open while we worked to improve their performance, we no longer believe that to be the appropriate action in this environment," the company said in a statement that appeared the Wall Street Journal article.
The company estimated it would generate $140 million to $170 million in cash from selling off inventory at its closed stores, according to the company statement.

3 Arrested for Attempting to Sell $400K in Coins

Three suspects were arrested, after trying to sell a suitcase full of stolen collectable coins worth more than $400,000.
On Dec. 14, a victim reported that gold, silver and collectable coins valued at more than $400,000 were taken during a burglary of a residence in the 3700 block of Breezemont Drive in Sarasota, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
Det. Maria Llovio issued a notification to retailers about the stolen gold and collectable coins. A day after the burglary, two people attempted to sell the coins to American Coin and Collectibles, after verifying the value of the coins at another shop, police said.
Two days later, on Dec. 17, the suspects returned to the store — which is located outside city limits — to sell the coins, police said, and at that point the store alerted authorities.

High-End Kennel Approved Near Airport

The former Rip Van Winkle bowling alley at 8154 North Tamiami Trail across from the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport is set to become home to as many 161 animals in short or long-term care after Manatee County Commissioners gave the nod to transforming the property to a high-end dog kennel.
“There will be internet cameras so owners can keep track of their dogs,” said Misty Servia an employee with King Engineering who represented the operator.
She said the old bowling alley will be transformed into a modern facility for the dogs. The operator plans to relocate his family to the area to run Bayside Pet Resort. Servia added that the owner, listed as 8154 LLC, has already coordinated with several Manatee County animal rescue operations and plans to use the new kennel as a showcase for adoptable animals once it is in operation.

Rare Turtle Returned to the Gulf

Mote Marine Laboratory researchers and volunteers completed an international loop Tuesday morning. A crowd was on hand to see one of the rarest sea turtles returned to home waters.
The Kemp's ridley that hatched on the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico wound up in the frigid waters near Holland.
The juvenile turtle somehow lost its way, perhaps swept by ocean currents, and wound up thousands of miles from home.
After three years of care and rehabilitation in Holland and Portugal, the marine animal was carried across the sands of Lido Beach this morning and returned to the warm embrace of the Gulf waters.
The Dutch dubbed the turtle “Johnny” and the Portuguese added, “Vasco da Gama,” for their famous explorer.
The Portuguese airline TAP flew the animal and his handlers to Miami, where they were escorted to Mote Marine by
