Manatee High Football Captures State Championship

ORLANDO — The Hurricanes struck on their first drive and never let up.
Now they're state champs. Again.
Manatee High's football team took a 17-0 lead into halftime of the Class 7A state championship game Friday at the Citrus Bowl and picked up right where they left off in the second half, scorching Jacksonville First Coast, 40-0, for the Canes' fifth state title.
All phases of the game clicked for the Canes (13-2), and First Coast could not get out of its own way. The Buccaneers committed either a turnover or a penalty after every momentum gain they got.
The Canes pounced.
Manatee's defense totaled three sacks and two interceptions. Junior running back Anthony Lauro and junior quarterback Cord Sandberg were nearly flawless, as the Canes cruised to their first state crown since 1992.
