'Embrace Your Grief,' Advises Counselor

Less than a year ago, Carole McLeod took a giant step. She started a business doing something that she loves and that has been part of her life for 40 years.
Carole helps people heal from their grief over the death of a loved one.
Carole is fulfilling this mission as founder and president of Grief Matters –"an educational resource for caregivers or anyone mourning the death of a loved one."
Carole's credentials speak for themselves. For 25 years, she and her late husband, Alan, were owners of a local funeral home. Not merely content with just helping families honor and prepare their deceased loved ones for a final resting place, she and her husband founded a grief support group.
They called it "Comfort Circle®," the first of its kind in the Tampa Bay area. This group was so successful that after the McLeods merged their

Hiring Freeze, Police Cuts Considered To Balance Budget

Freeze hiring, tax, and spend the rainy day fund seems to be the formula for Sarasota to resolve its budget deficit this year.
But long-term, the city has to think about taking “bold decisions” and educate the public about the city’s financial options, said City Commissioner Shannon Snyder at a Tuesday budget workshop at City Hall. That included eliminating the Sarasota Police Department.
The city is facing a $4 million general fund deficit for fiscal year 2013, but held a workshop Tuesday to give staff direction on how to close the gap.
“I don't think we can afford to run our own police department anymore,” Snyder said, “I think that cost alone, we could probably contract and eliminate duplication of services at administration level. … I think that's a big, bold move. That's $7 million.”
It’s not unheard of in

Living Well: A Look at Vitamin Supplements

Although vitamin supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry, medical and nutritional experts urge patients to balance their diets with whole foods for optimal health.
In 2009, the American Botanical Council’s Quarterly Journal estimated that sales of herbal supplements in the United States had reached an estimated high of $5 billion annually. Other stats place it as high as $25 billion. That means consumers are the target. After poring over documents and research on vitamins, it became obvious that vitamin supplements are a complex topic, requiring a good background in disease prevention, nutrition and physiology. When you factor in that current research shows it is often unclear as to whether vitamin or nutritional supplements make a difference when taken in pill form, the topic can have your head spinning.

Pirates Florida Director Delivers Newest Fan

Trevor Gooby, the mild-mannered director of Florida operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders, took on an entirely new role Tuesday night when he delivered the team's newest fan at the front gates of the stadium.
Delivered in its most literal sense: a fan with his umbilical cord still attached.
"It was definitely an interesting night," Gooby said. "It's an interesting way to start spring training."
The Pittsburgh Pirates were having a "soft opening" for season ticket holders, neighborhood fans and invited guests. There was no game, but the sound system was being tested, concessionaires were working out the kinks, the mascots were trying out their newest moves. And then a worker spotted a pregnant woman in some pain.
Gooby stepped in to make sure everything was all right when Latisha Kirk told him she thought she

Hoax on Botany Avenue May Be SWATing Prank

A 21st Century version of a prank call called SWATing is upping the ante in both pranks and punishment, and authorities say they believe Sarasota is the latest victim.
Sarasota residents in the 2600 block of Botany Avenue saw a scene unfold Sunday where the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office SWAT team reported to a home after a call to the sheriff's office non-emergency line. Homes even had to be evacuated, The Herald-Tribune reported.
A man at the home was carried out in handcuffs, but it was all a twisted hoax picking on those residents, the sheriff's office said

“How someone can view this as a joke is beyond me,” Sheriff Tom Knight said. “While responding to a fake emergency is certainly a waste of our assets, of greater concern to me is the risk to unsuspecting citizens who might find themselves at the wrong end of a

Car Repossessed? You Still Have Rights!

The physical repossession of a car is much easier than an eviction or a foreclosure.
In most finance agreements or lease agreements, the lending company has the right to repossess your vehicle if you miss your monthly payments.
We all know someone that has had a car repossessed. The towing company finds the vehicle somewhere and next thing you know, your car is gone.
They may have found your car at your house, at the mall, at work, or tracked it with the GPS device that some dealerships place on your vehicle without your knowledge.
Most people that have a car repossessed are not surprised. They know they missed their payments and played “cat and mouse” games with the repossession company and the lender. However, what most people do not expect is what may happen next, usually in the following order:

Occupy Sarasota Has Its First Arrest

An Occupy Sarasota protester was arrested Saturday following a chalk drawing at Selby Five Points Park, and the American Civil Liberties Union will investigate, according to The Herald-Tribune.
The arrest soon made its way online through video and the Occupy Sarasota blog, Occupy My Soapbox.
The Herald-Tribune reported that the Sarasota's ACLU legal team will look at whether this violated free speech:

"Sarasota Police Officer John Neri arrested Chris Young Saturday afternoon as the disabled Iraq War veteran was writing a slogan disparaging the American Legislative Exchange Council(ALEC), a conservative public policy group he opposes.
"Neri charged Young with trespass, resisting arrest, obstructing pedestrian traffic and tampering with public property. The tampering charge is based on a city ordinance that states: “No person
