2011 Year in Review: Beach renourishment continues with vote
Longboat Key’s erosive North End received a new 130-foot wide beach last fall. Public Works Director Juan Florensa said the $5 million project placed a total of 150,000 cubic yards of fine white sand from the Broadway beach access to the north tip of the island. Florensa said the beach was a short-term fix that was authorized by the commission as an interim measure.
The sand on the North End has already experienced significant erosion in the past several months since its placement, and the Town Commission will need to decide on a more permanent structural solution to erosion. Options include terminal groins, breakwaters, jetties and semi-permeable groins. It is important, said Florensa, that the commission makes a decision regarding the North End structures because it will take another year to design and
2011 Year in Review: Publix renovation planned for 2012
The proposed new Publix will be 49,533 square feet, an increase from the current 38,565 square feet. The addition of liquor and pharmaceutical sales is also in the plan. The shops next to and including Nosh-A-Rye are owned by Howard Rooks. Publix intends to buy and add 1.52 acres from that parcel and add it to the main parcel. Publix also intends to buy from Rooks another .97 acres to the north of the Publix site, which is vacant land that was previously
2011 Year in Review: Do dogs belong on Longboat beaches?
Some residents are supportive of the idea of dogs on the beach, stating the potential benefits of vacationers who may choose to visit based on the ability to bring their pets. Others are opposed to the idea, citing waste material and disease as well as threats to endangered sea turtle eggs and the dog bite liability.
The Town Commission, after hearing from residents on the pros and cons of allowing dogs access to Longboat Key beaches, decided last fall to form an ad hoc committee where both sides can form an approach that takes in the many property and health concerns of those opposed and the desires of those in favor who want their pets to enjoy
2011 Year in Review: P&Z director resigns following investigation

2011 Year in Review: Colony court battles rage on
Colony Association President Jay Yablon and representatives from the association’s chosen developer, Club Holdings, met with community members, town staff and several commissioners in December to make clear their intent to redevelop the Colony sooner rather than later and with or without the three acres and interest controlled by Klauber. Yablon and Club Holdings, led by Principal Glenn Miller, will be submitting a site plan and performing due diligence with the town.
In short, the association is
2011 Year in Review: St. Denis resigns, Bullock hired as manager
And while speculation regarding why a majority of the commission was so dissatisfied with St. Denis that they wished him to resign ran rampant, Town Attorney Dave Persson said St. Denis was the exception in his longevity in the position.
“Mr. St. Denis has served the town of Longboat Key for more than 14 years,” said Persson. “That’s the longest serving town manager in the town’s history. The average tenure for a town manager is about five years. The fact that Bruce has been here for almost three times
2011 Year in Review
This year, however, marked several significant new topics that have the potential to change the future of Longboat Key such as The Colony closing, the proposed cell tower at Longboat Island Chapel and whether to allow dogs on the beach.
The following is a summary of the events that shaped the news in 2011 and will continue to inform our key far into 2012 and
