Are School Cafeterias Hindering Classroom Success?
The link between successful performance in the classroom and access to proper nutrition has been well established. However, while we have done a relatively good job of ensuring that students who might otherwise go without are getting fed, we have done a very poor job of ensuring that the wide array of families who patron school cafeterias are being set up for academic success through optimal nutrition. Shrinking budgets, standardized tests and class size amendments have tied struggling school districts in knots, yet still they continue to shoot themselves in the foot on the lunch line – one of the few places where they are empowered to improve.My obsession with school nutrition started the first time I joined my son for breakfast in his Manatee County elementary school.
