Honor, Brains & A Big Heart

For 90-year old Dan Paradies, founder of The Paradies Shops, helping others is a promise borne from deep gratitude and a compassionate core.
By Steven J. Smith
When Dan Paradies narrowly escaped death in a mid-air collision as a young officer in the Air Force during World War II, he vowed he would share his good fortune with as many people as he could — and he has.
The plane crash occurred when Paradies (pronounced “para-dees”), then 20, was flying in a training exercise near San Antonio, Texas shortly after the U.S. entered the war in 1941.

Is it the Ringling College of Art & Design? The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art? Perhaps St. Armands Circle?
These are all great choices, but if you head just south of Ringling Boulevard between 301 and Osprey Avenue, and you'll see the moss-draped trees of Towles Court, an artistic wonderland that too many don't yet know about. There's a reason that Coastal Living called this area a "Top Ten Artist

Streetscape Plans Readying for Approval

When the Community Redevelopment Agency meets Feb. 7, an overhauled downtown Sarasota streetscape plan that costs $4.4 million will be in front of them to consider.
The plan has seen tweaks at the Downtown Improvement District meetings this past month as well as at a Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board meeting Thursday where the city's chief planner Steven Stancel laid out the proposal for the board's recommendation.
CRAAB voted to recommend the plan to the Community Redevelopment Agency to be accepted, subject to First and Main streets receive highest priority to be completed first. CRAAB member Valerie Buchand voted against the recommendation.
The plans feature a lot less brick — asphalt roads will be in each plan and concrete sidewalks with brick accents will be the norm for most of the plan.
Here's how the plan

Poll Predicts Romney Is Florida Winner

A poll gives Mitt Romney an 11 point lead over his closest rival in the Florida Republican primary, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Romney is making a last push for Tampa Bay voters today, with a scheduled visit at 2:30 p.m. in Dunedin.
The new numbers suggest that the former Massachusetts governor has regained ground since former House Speaker Newt Gingrich emerged the winner in South Carolina.A poll by the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald/Bay News 9 shows Romney with 42 percent of likely voters, compared to 31 percent for Gingrich. Rick Santorum follows with 14 percent, and Ron Paul has 6 percent.Romney's renewed vigor is being attributed in part to his performances in debates since the South Carolina vote.
Romney also is more popular with female voters. Some observers say that women voters' support for Romney is a vote against

Memory Expert's Tips to Avoid Forgetfulness

According to the Mayo Clinic, some degree of memory loss, as well as a modest decline in thinking skills, is fairly common as we age.
However, as noted at a memory loss prevention workshop recently given by Memory Specialist Peg Stella at the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center, there are techniques to enhance your memory and cut down on forgetfulness.
Entitled, “Where Did I Leave My Car Keys?” Stella’s hour-long workshop was attended by a group of local seniors, most in their 70s and 80s. She began her presentation by having participants think back to the first house they remember residing in as a child.
In doing so, she requested her audience to draw a picture laying out the rooms in their house and then placing specific items of furniture where they were located in the home. Then to remember these pieces of furniture

Restaurants Adjusting To Customers' Tastes

During a tough stretch the last few years for restaurants, chefs and owners had to figure out how to get customers in the door.
Restaurants that Patch spoke to at the fifth annual Forks and Corks Food and Wine Festival opened up about how they're doing just that.
Lynches Pub & Grub
Irish restaurant Lynches Pub & Grub on St. Armands Circle has been in business for 25 years, and moved to St. Armands from Longboat Key in 2003.
Ethna Lynch says heavy sauces are on their way out for now.
"They're definitely looking for a good product — a good, raw ingredient — and not fancy," she said. "We make everything from scratch at the restaurant."
You'll find your classics there, but it's the desserts by Christine Lynch that folks seem to rave about. A blueberry banana crumble was offered to Forks and Corks guests Sunday by the

5 Things: Florida Primary, 'Shark Men' and more

1. Tuesday is the day for Sarasota County's 120,034 registered Republicans to vote for their pick to be the Republican presidential nominee. That's the issue on the ballot in Sarasota County, so your homework tonight should be light. Stay with Patch Tuesday for all your election coverage needs.
2. Speaking of the election, Sarasota is still generating some stories for The Washington Post in an anaylsis/joking sort of way, but this time more of the state is included in the joke. We think the story's joking, kind of. But in the middle of it, we literally find out where's the beef:

“We get Chicago. We get St. Louis. The Wisconsin folks,” says Michael Klauber, proprietor of Michael’s On East, a resplendent restaurant in Sarasota with an interior designed to evoke the great ocean liners and supper clubs of the 1930s and 1940s.

Candidates Go to College to Learn Campaigning

If only here were a handbook called "How to Successfully Campaign for Office and Get Elected." It would be a bestsller during election season.
Friday's Candidate College at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee came close to being just that kind of guide.
The event for current and potential candidates covered how to file for candidacy, raise funds, develop social media tactics, tap the power of the media and more.
The final session of the day featured Christian Zeigler of the Sarasota County Republican Club and Richard O'Brien, chairman of the Manatee County Democratic Party, giving some insider tips and insight on how to organize.
"At the end of the day, you have to be the chief executive of your campaign," O'Brien said.
Candidates can use the local parties' clubs for some basic supports and gain contact lists, but

Cat of the Week: Smoochie

Smoochie's name says it all — he's a lover. The more attention the better.
Smoochie loves to be petted and has the purr to prove it.
He's quite a talker, too. He'll even tap you with his paw if she needs attention.
On top of that, Smoochie knows how to "sit" for treats.
People call me a beautiful boy because he has big green eyes and has very attractive gray and black tabby markings, mixed with a snowy white coat.
Smoochie is just five years young, so what you see is what you get. No kitten phase.
Smoochie's owner took him in when I was a stray, but the owner lost her home and had to give Smoochie up.
Smoochie lived inside with other cats and dogs, too. His owner fed him dry food and gave him lots of love.
Smoochie's feline-ality assessment says he's a Private Investigator. He's working undercover to keep an eye on
