Federal Judge Grants Injunction on New Florida Voter Registration Rules

BRADENTON – A federal judge issued an injunction halting enforcement of part of Florida’s controversial new voting law, ruling that the 48-hour deadline for third party groups to turn in voter registration forms and $1,000 fines are “harsh and impractical.” The suit was filed by the League of Women Voters, who had halted their longstanding practice of holding voter registration drives because of the difficult regulations imposed by the law. Federal Judge Robert Hinkle, Tallahassee, left the rest of the law in place, though parts of it are currently being challenged in federal court in Washington. Hinkle said that the new law's voter registration rules “impose burdensome record-keeping and reporting requirements that serve little if any purpose, thus rendering them unconstitutional.”A host of other groups, including the ACLU joined

Manatee County Administrator's Budget Proposal Looks to Hold the Line

BRADENTON -- Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker proposed a $458 million county budget recommendation on Thursday that would keep property tax levels at last year’s rates and hold public services steady, while avoiding layoffs. The budget reduces the county’s operating expenses by another $4.3 million, but since capital budgets are up $11.1 million, the overall net budget is $6.8 million more than last year’s adopted net budget (excluding Port Manatee). During a budget presentation to the Manatee County Commission, Hunzeker pointed out that even with the slight increase this year the county budget has declined by $132.6 million (22.4 percent) over the past six years, and property taxes have been reduced by $82.7 million or 35 percent. The budget is also 3 percent below the “rollback” rate, which is the tax level required to

County sheriff requests money for pay raises

MANATEE COUNTY- Sheriff Brad Steube is asking the county for more than $5 million so his deputies can receive a well deserved pay raise. It's something they haven't seen in about five years."These are folks that work hard each and everyday," Steube said. "These are folks that have been able to get a decrease in crime almost every year for the last five years."At a county commission meeting on Thursday, Steube made the request. He informed commissioners that because of the low pay his deputies receive, 40 of them have resigned this past year alone. Many of them have gone to different regional law enforcement agencies where they will be getting more pay. In fact, here on the Suncoast and throughout the Tampa Bay

Sister of Beatles' George Harrison Partners With USF

In life, sometimes we need to look up and sing "Here Comes The Sun" and "it's all right." Sarasota resident Louise Harrison aims to be the shining light for area students and staff at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee and local schools this fall.
Harrison, sister of the late Beatle George Harrison, is the first-ever fellow for USF Sarasota-Manatee's Office of Partnerships of Arts Integrated Teaching, or PAInT. She moved back to Sarasota in April after spending years in Branson, Missouri. She previously lived here from 1980 through the mid 2000s.
"Actually, I don't look like much like a fellow," Harrison said with a jolly laugh. "I'm kind of a seniorly lady."
Harrison was stateside after World War II and when she heard her kid brother's band was doing well in the United Kingdom, she thought she ought to make sure they

Get Your Hurricane Disaster Kit Together

Having a disaster kit together is one of the top recommendations of emergency planners as the 2012 hurricane season nears.
But just what should you put into a kit?
Here’s what the National Hurricane Center recommends:
Water. Have at least one gallon for each person for up to seven days.
Food. Make sure to have nonperishable food items for up to seven days for each person in the household. Be sure to include a hand can opener and paper or plastic plates and utensils. It’s also a good idea to store snacks, specialty foods for infants or seniors and cooking utensils.
Important papers. Use a waterproof container to store insurance documents, medical records, Social Security cards, bank records, birth certificates and so on.

Committee Tasked With Creating Answers To Parking Issues

Parking management in Sarasota's been so complicated this past year that an advisory committee hopes to make the situation more manageable.
The city's Parking Advisory Committee met for the first time Wednesday morning in City Hall where they tried to get their bearings on what they will set out to do.
"In my short time here my observation I kind of gather is there wasn't a consistent way to provide input from the community when it comes to parking issues," said Mark Lyons, parking manager for the city.
And this committee is one way to provide that.
"Parking isn't really rocket science although some in our industry thinks it is," he said.
Since the meters were eliminated, the committee was created by the City Commission to figure out how to make parking fair throughout the city and the Parking Division reports to Deputy City

Marauders Struggling Near FSL Basement

BRADENTON – The 40-11 St. Lucie Mets have opened up a big lead on the entire FSL South, 16 games up on Jupiter and Palm Beach who are tied for second. After a 5-5 run, the Bradenton Marauders are still playing sub-500 ball and only the hapless Ft. Myers Miracle (.392 winning percentage) are keeping the club out of the basement. Still, there are some signs of life on both offense and defense as Bradenton seems capable of putting together a strong run, should the team start firing on all

Are School Cafeterias Hindering Classroom Success?

The link between successful performance in the classroom and access to proper nutrition has been well established. However, while we have done a relatively good job of ensuring that students who might otherwise go without are getting fed, we have done a very poor job of ensuring that the wide array of families who patron school cafeterias are being set up for academic success through optimal nutrition. Shrinking budgets, standardized tests and class size amendments have tied struggling school districts in knots, yet still they continue to shoot themselves in the foot on the lunch line – one of the few places where they are empowered to improve. My obsession with school nutrition started the first time I joined my son for breakfast in his Manatee County elementary school. Missing Manatee Alert

A rehabilitated manatee apparently has ditched a radio transmitter, prompting wildlife officials to ask the public for help in spotting the wayward sea mammal.
The Bradenton Herald reports that a manatee named Tippecanoe may be swimming in the Manatee River-Sarasota Bay area. The manatee was tagged with a radio transmitter that has been found near Punta Gorda.
Officials now would like to know the location of Tippecanoe. They say he may be easily identified by a belt that had held the trasnmitter, according to the Bradenton Herald.
Anyone who may have seen the missing manatee is asked to call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922).

Sarasota, Siesta Key Are Just Diamonds Along Florida's Highways

Whether in Sarasota or somewhere in Florida, you'll find precious jewels of Florida heritage and history — even international history — living right here.
Mining the state for those treasured stories in the Sunshine State is what a five-part series on PBS station WEDU aims to do.
The Jack Kerouac-inspired Diamonds Along The Highway is a team effort between writer/producer Mark Reese, who splits time between Venice and Los Angeles, and Reese's friend of 12 years, Gus Mollasis of Sarasota.
Florida really doesn't have a series that "showcases important people, places and things about this great state. There's so much diversity in Florida," Reese told Patch. "… We have such great diversity from the northern part of the state to the southern part of the state. It's more diversified than here in California. I'll stand by that."

BRADENTON -- On May 2, 2012, Deputy Thomas Smith was at a lab getting his blood work done for insurance when he observed a young boy who was uneasy as he prepared to “get a shot” to give a blood sample. The boy’s mother saw Deputy Smith wink at her son and the boy responded with a big smile. The lab tech took Deputy Smith’s blood first, but when he was done, Deputy Smith asked the boy if he wanted to sit on his lap while he gave the blood sample. The mother captured the moment with a photo and sent it to an on-line news agency, who in turn inquired on the identity of the deputy through the MSO Public Information Office. St. Johns River Advocates Ask Trustees to Protect Public Resources

BRADENTON -- A group of citizens whose lives and quality of lives are at risk are preparing to file suit against the Florida Board of Trustees over a plan by the Koch Brothers/Georgia-Pacific paper mill to start dumping up to 47 million gallons of paper mill waste per day in the river. Mayor Bryant Stakes Out Palmetto's Stance on Ballfields in Open Letter to Stakeholders

PALMETTO – In the continuing saga of the Palmetto Little League fields, many parties involved are still trying to figure out the convoluted chain of events that led to an announcement earlier this month that a site which they had all been moving forward with since 2010 was off the table. In an open letter to all stakeholders on Tuesday, Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover-Bryant sought to clarify what her city's government knew and when, as well as its current position. The original fields were used as the site of the new elementary school in 2009. A land swap was then arranged involving the school district, the City of Palmetto, Manatee County and the Manatee Fruit Company, with the intent being that a former citrus grove would be converted into a regulation Little League complex that would be managed and maintained by the county. Is This The Real KISS Statue Couple?

A new book claims that a Frederick, Maryland, woman is the nurse in the iconic Unconditional Surrender photo, which was replicated into several statues including the one that will return to Sarasota this summer.
In the book, The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind The Photo that Ended World War II, author Lawrence Verria writes that he believes that Greta Friedman is the nurse. The book is published by the Naval Institute Press.
Verria told WHAG, a Hagerstown, Maryland NBC affiliate, that the woman is undeniably Friedman:

"Of the three people that came forward, Greta Friedman was the only one that it could possibly be," said Verria, "Her height is correct, her body build is correct, her hairdo is correct based on pictures from that time period."

Verria said he used forensic analysis and other modern technology to verify the

FPL's Rate Hike Request to Have Sarasota Hearing

FPL's rate request will get a public hearing Thursday in Sarasota. The customer service hearing is at 9:30 a.m, at the City Hall.
The utility filed a petition with the Florida Public Service Commission in March for an increase, which would become effective in January 2013.
The Sarasota Herald Tribune reports:
Under a request before state regulators, FPL would increase its base rate by 16 percent next year and boost its maximum profit margin from 11 percent to 12.5 percent after taxes.
The Tribune reports that the increase would add $7.09 to the average household monthly bill for 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
A drop in fuel prices could offset the increase. FPL notes that the average household could pay as little as $1.41 more a month, if there is a reduction in the cost of fuel.
The Public Service Commission is holding a

10 Ways to Improve Your Hurricane Plan

As the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season makes its approach, emergency management officials across the Tampa Bay area are asking residents to get a plan in place.
But what exactly does that mean?
According to the National Hurricane Center, there’s more to it than just stocking up on water and nonperishable food.
Here’s a checklist of things the center recommends residents do in advance of hurricane season:
Discuss the types of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In some circumstances, the safest areas may not be in your home, but within your community.
Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of

Is Time Running Out to Save our Oceans?

The oceans do a lot of the Earth’s dirty work. On a given day, they will absorb 22 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), a third of the global output. In doing so they help to keep climate change in check, but they also pay a heavy toll as a result.Increasing levels of carbon in the ocean are making the water more acidic, and that’s beginning to have an impact on shellfish, corals and some of the tiniest shell-making marine organisms that are essential to the ocean food web. The June 2012 issue of E – The Environmental Magazine (now posted at www.emagazine.com) takes a closer look at the phenomenon of “ocean acidification,” the process by which levels of CO2 are rising, changing the chemistry of the ocean, and the ways this is impacting sea creatures on which mankind depends.Shellfish farmers in Washington and Oregon were some of
