Federal Judge Grants Injunction on New Florida Voter Registration Rules

BRADENTON – A federal judge issued an injunction halting enforcement of part of Florida’s controversial new voting law, ruling that the 48-hour deadline for third party groups to turn in voter registration forms and $1,000 fines are “harsh and impractical.” The suit was filed by the League of Women Voters, who had halted their longstanding practice of holding voter registration drives because of the difficult regulations imposed by the law. Federal Judge Robert Hinkle, Tallahassee, left the rest of the law in place, though parts of it are currently being challenged in federal court in Washington. Hinkle said that the new law's voter registration rules “impose burdensome record-keeping and reporting requirements that serve little if any purpose, thus rendering them unconstitutional.”A host of other groups, including the ACLU joined
