FPL's Rate Hike Request to Have Sarasota Hearing

FPL's rate request will get a public hearing Thursday in Sarasota. The customer service hearing is at 9:30 a.m, at the City Hall.
The utility filed a petition with the Florida Public Service Commission in March for an increase, which would become effective in January 2013.
The Sarasota Herald Tribune reports:
Under a request before state regulators, FPL would increase its base rate by 16 percent next year and boost its maximum profit margin from 11 percent to 12.5 percent after taxes.
The Tribune reports that the increase would add $7.09 to the average household monthly bill for 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
A drop in fuel prices could offset the increase. FPL notes that the average household could pay as little as $1.41 more a month, if there is a reduction in the cost of fuel.
