Town favors easing commercial buffer rule

Historically fences were discouraged as buffers with the vision that Longboat Key would retain a park-like ambiance and setting. This change would alter that initiative.

The Longboat Key Town Commission moved to change the rules that mandate a 10-foot buffer be created and maintained between commercial and residential properties.
The commission changed the regulation in two ways: first, reducing the buffer required from 10 to three feet, and secondly, they changed the rule that if a commercial property owner rezones his property to residential, it is his responsibility to erect the buffer because he chose to make the change.
The existing rule calls for a 10-foot vegetative buffer, which historically was preferred to enhance the park-like setting of Longboat Key. The move was to allow
