Town clarifies how to achieve opacity

The Longboat Key Town Commission reached consensus to allow six months for property owners to replace and grow a required hedge or buffer to the dictated opacity level of 80 percent.
The change allows time for plants to mature and in the eyes of the Town Commission and strikes a balance between the goal of the town in seeing the hedge replaced to code and allowing the property owner time to plant.
The issue was recommended for approval by the Planning and Zoning Board, and the commission accepted the board’s recommendation as written without modifying the measure. Commissioner Phill Younger said he was in favor because it added specificity.
The town attorney pointed out that the current policy is for the Code Enforcement Department to work with the property owner to achieve compliance as quickly as possible.
